Kraken vs Coinbase vs Gemini: Which Should You Use?

Verified against primary sources: August 2, 2026 (offers and availability) · How we verify.

These three exchanges form the trust tier of American crypto. All of them are established, regulated, US-serving platforms, and for most people any of the three would work. The real question is which one fits your situation, because they differ in ways that matter: what trading actually costs, which products exist, and who can use them where. This page compares them on the things that decide the choice.

Quick verdict

  • If you are brand new: Coinbase is the most polished on-ramp and works in all 50 states. Its convenience comes at a price, so plan to graduate to its Advanced interface once you are comfortable.

  • If you trade actively: Kraken Pro is the cheapest place to start. Its entry fees (0.40% maker / 0.80% taker, falling to 0.22%/0.38% at $10K of monthly volume) undercut both Coinbase Advanced and Gemini ActiveTrader, which start at 0.60%/1.20%. All three converge toward zero maker fees at high volume.

  • If you are in New York: Coinbase or Gemini. Kraken does not serve NY at all.

  • If custody weighs on you most: Gemini has built its brand on regulation-first custody, and Coinbase is the largest publicly traded custodian in the country. You are not making a custody mistake with any of the three.

What trading actually costs

All three exchanges run the same two-lane structure. There is a simple retail lane, where you pay for convenience through spreads and variable fees, and a professional lane with maker and taker pricing that improves as your volume grows. The professional lane is free to use on all three platforms, and meaningful trading belongs there.

The professional schedules tell a clear story. Kraken restructured its tiers in July 2026 around a cross-platform system, and its entry pricing is now the cheapest of the three: 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker with no volume at all, improving quickly to 0.22% and 0.38% once your trailing 30-day volume passes $10,000.

Coinbase Advanced and Gemini ActiveTrader publish nearly identical ladders to each other, both starting at 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker and both reaching 0.40% and 0.80% at the $10,000 mark. At serious volume the three converge, with maker fees reaching zero in the multi-million-dollar tiers on every platform.

Two wrinkles are worth knowing.

  • First, all three offer an alternative qualification path based on the assets you hold rather than the volume you trade: Kraken counts assets on platform, and both Coinbase and Gemini count account balance toward tier placement. If you hold a meaningful balance but trade rarely, you may qualify for better rates than your volume alone would earn.

  • Second, Gemini publishes a separate schedule for API orders starting at 0.20% maker / 0.40% taker with no volume requirement — a third of its own web interface's base rate, and the cheapest zero-volume pricing in this comparison for anyone comfortable trading programmatically.

The retail lanes are a different world.

  • Kraken's instant interface charges roughly 1% plus payment fees and spread.

  • Coinbase's simple interface includes a spread plus the greater of a flat fee or a variable rate that runs near 1.49% for bank purchases and up to about 3.99% by card.

  • Gemini's retail mode publishes no fixed table at all; the fee is calculated per order and shown before you confirm.

Both Kraken and Coinbase sell subscriptions that waive retail-lane fees — Kraken+ and Coinbase One, each around five dollars a month with monthly volume caps — which can make sense for regular small buyers, though spreads still apply. Or you can skip the question entirely by using the professional lane from day one.
